After relentless anti-gay bullying at school, despite the fact he did not identify as gay, Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover took his own life on April 6, 2009, 11 days before his 12th birthday.

Carl's mother Sirdeaner Walker has appeared on Oprah, The Ellen DeGeneres Show and many others programs to talk about how bullying robbed the world of a caring, selfless boy whose suicide note asked that his Pokémon cards be given to his little brother. Below are video clips from Ms. Walker and Carl's sister Dominique Walker about the need for federal anti-bullying legislation.
Ms. Walker testified before the House Subcommittees on Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education and Healthy Families and Communities on July 8 in support of the Safe Schools Improvement Act (SSIA).
Dominique, a high school junior, attended GLSEN's Safe Schools Advocacy Summit in March to advocate for SSIA. Since Carl's death, Dominique has become co-President of her school's Gay-Straight Alliance, which works to improve school climate and end anti-LGBT bullying. Carl, who did not identify as gay, was relentlessly bullied with anti-gay slurs.
